Dana Point is one of southern California’s most popular boating communities, home to a large yachting and fishing industry, situated on a harbor near the southern edge of Orange County. Dana Point is the second to last southern beach town in Orange County as you head to San Diego, just south of Laguna Beach and north of San Clemente.
Dana Point is known for its long stretch of rolling hills and coastal bluffs overlooking the Pacific.
The city was named for Richard Henry Dana, Jr. He described Dana Point as “the only romantic spot on the California coast” in his classic sea journal, Two Years Before the Mast. The book documented his sailings between 1834 and 1836.
A quaint beach town community filled with a rich and vibrant history, Dana Point has a charming attitude all its own. Residents are outgoing and friendly. The proximity to the beach and the harbor promotes an active lifestyle with tons of outdoor activities. There’s not a day that goes by that you won’t come across surfers, bicyclers, walkers, joggers, dog-lovers, beachgoers, sail-boaters, fishermen, whale watchers, kayakers or paddle-boarders and all within minutes of your home.
The Dana Point Harbor is also considered the gateway to Doheny State Park, one of California’s most popular beach facilities with a 62-acre State Park offering camping, picnicking, swimming, tide pool explorations and more.
Real Estate prices are considered to be more affordable compared to other beach towns in Orange County, depending on which area you choose. Dana Point’s finest residential areas include Monarch Beach, Ritz Cove, Monarch Bay, Dana Point Headlands, and Capistrano Beach, which is home to a mix of condos and smaller bluff-front homes. One of the newest communities in Dana Point is the ocean front community, “The Strand at Headlands.” It features over 100 custom Dana Point homes located right on the beach.
Dana Point is broken down into 4 different areas: 1) Capistrano Beach; 2) Lantern Village; 3) Monarch Beach; 4) Dana Hills; and 5) Del Obispo. A short description of each neighborhood follows:
Located at the very south border of Dana Point, right before San Clemente. Within Capo Beach, buyers will find charming beach cottages, exquisite custom homes and sprawling estates that sit on the bluff front. There are a number of fine communities to choose from including Azul Circle, which is comprised of peaceful cul-de-sac lined with charming homes that boast ocean views. The Palisades is another lovely Capo Beach community known for its beautiful custom homes and ideal location near Pine’s Park and the beach. Some of the most sought-after multi-million dollar homes are within the private gated Beach Road community, which dazzles with stunning beachfront homes right on the sand. Capo Beach is a popular area due to the close proximity to the beach with easy freeway access.
The Newport Beach of Dana Point, Monarch Beach has become very upscale over the years with the recent additions to the St. Regis Hotel and the oceanfront Ritz Carlton Hotel. The surrounding neighborhoods bring posh living to luxury condos and homes that often have golf and/or ocean views. The area offers a lot of private and exclusive gated neighborhoods in all different price ranges. The newest ocean front community is called The Strand at Headlands – amazing multimillion dollar homes right on the beach. Other exclusive neighborhoods including Ritz Cove, Ritz Point and Point Monarch will offer homes starting above $2 million. Popular communities like Cape Cove and Marquesa at Monarch Beach are wonderful gated communities that feature beach close homes in the million-dollar range. You can also find condos and townhomes ranging from the high $400,000 to just under $800,000.
One of our favorite areas, Lantern Village is a collection of beach and harbor close homes and condos that are within walking distance to Dana Point Harbor and Doheny Beach. The homes in this area have great architectural styles and capture the nautical feel of Dana Point. Lantern Village is located in the new Lantern District of Dana Point, which offers an easy walk to local restaurants and shopping. This is a prime location and property values reflect higher prices here than other parts of Dana Point.
Located just east of the beach in Dana Point, Dana Hills features homes and condos that were built in the 1970’s and are close to the Dana Hills High School and Laguna Niguel. Dana Hills is a family oriented area with a real sense of community. Some Dana Hills homes have ocean views and some are located in gated communities.
The Del Obispo area of Dana Point borders San Juan Capistrano. The homes in this area can range significantly in prices from a $200,000 condo to a $2-million-dollar luxury home. Some of the best ocean view neighborhoods consist of Bal Harbour and the Village at Dana Point communities. Bal Harbour is a secure gated community with ocean view properties normally priced above $2 million dollars. The Village at Dana Point is a more affordable neighborhood with view properties in the mid $1.5 million and above range.
